There has been a resurgence of Ebola in Liberia with 3 new cases discovered since Sunday.
The first case was discovered post mortem, while the other 2 cases were discovered during the contact tracing of the first case.
The two new Ebola patients are in stable conditions in a Monrovia hospital in Liberia.
There have been speculations as to the source of this re-infection, the area affected Nedowein, is not on the border with Guinea or Sierra Leone and the people involved have not travelled to Guinea or Sierra Leone in recent times.
Nedowein is however close to the airport.
The source of the reinfection is still being investigated, sexual transmission is a possibility as the virus has been found to remain in body fluids such as the sperm for several months also vomit and urine for about 21 days.
Animal transmission is also a possibility, there have been cases of transmission via the ingestion of monkey flesh.
The trio involved were said to have eaten dog meat prior to the occurrence.
Currently there are 175 contacts of the deceased being monitored, including the members of staff at the clinic where he was misdiagnosed as a case of malaria and sent home with medications.
Efforts are being made to contain the re-infection within Nedowein.
In the week to 28th June, 20 new cases of Ebola were reported in Guinea and Sierra Leone, same number has the previous week.
Case incidence has remained static with 20 to 27 cases per week being reported within the past 5 weeks.
12 cases in Guinea were reported from thesame 3 prefectures that were affected last week : Boke, Conakry, and Forecariah.
Sierra Leone also had 8 cases from the same 3 districts as the previous week: Kambia, Port Loko, and the district that includes the capital, Freetown. Ineffective contact tracing and monitoring have slowed down the efforts to speedily end the outbreak.
Some progress is being made albeit slowly. The containment of cases within the same locality in the last 2 weeks is encouraging.
Police in Freetown are hunting down 7 members of a household who have escaped from quarantine after being in contact with a youth who died on Tuesday. 6 other contacts are currently under observation in a clinic.
2 quarantine escapees have also been arrested and jailed by the local authorities in Portloko Sierra Leone.
Suspected cases of Ebola are being investigated in The Democratic Republic of Congo after 6 hunters fell ill and 4 died following the killing a sick antelope last Friday.
They had symptoms related to Ebola such as diarrhoea, vomiting and bloody urine.
Fever was however not reported.
Investigations as to the cause is still ongoing.
