Continued from last night in paradise, part 1
She had shouted and everyone had come running out of their rooms.
The woman in the room next to the main entrance had rushed back into her room and came out with a bottle of dark liquid which she called agbo Iba ( malaria concoction). Another man had forcefully inserted a spoon in between her teeth, this they said was to prevent her from grinding her teeth on her tongue. The man's live in girl friend who was only clad in a tiny wrapper, with the top of her breast jutting out had run to get a bucket of water which she dutifully poured on the little girl.
We then noticed jerky movements in the girl's limbs and also saw that she was rolling her eye ball upward. She obviously was convulsing!
Luckily, aunty teacher who lives in one of the rooms at the back and always proudly declares at every opportunity that she is learned walked into the corridor. On taking in the sight, she ordered all of us to step back and let the sick child get some air. She then said the child needed to be taken to the health centre. We were initially reluctant when we thought of the financial implications, but she assured us it was free for children. One of the women quickly got the child's mother's GSM number and informed her of the situation.
The child's condition was said to be beyond the scope of the primary health centre and had to be referred to a general hospital. On arriving there we were told the child was anaemic and needed blood. The doctor also said the child was malnourished, had severe malaria and had little blood in her body.
Eventually the whole compound had to contribute money for the couple to go and get blood from an outside facility as the hospital's blood bank was dry.
A familiar tune on TV brought me back from my reverie as a familiar voice greeted the viewers at home good evening, asked them if they knew where their children were at this late hour and proceeded to read the news.
This was Uloma's TV. Everyone complained about its loudness all to no avail. Perhaps the lady is partially deaf. It was however good news for me because my TV set got damaged due to low voltage last month and I have not been able to save up to repair it.
I followed the news to the part where they mentioned that government doctors were again on strike for wage related reasons....... To be continued.
