My African dream : last night in paradise
Last night as I laid upon my rickety old bed, I began to imagine what being in paradise would be like. Amidst the loud noise of my neighbor's transistor radio drifting into my room through an open window. One of the local stations was on and was playing a familiar beat known as Afro juju.
A dog barked in the far distance and suddenly the whole neighborhood erupted in a loud shout of up NEPA.
My dingy little room came alive as the 40 kilo watts bulb became ignited. It took a while to get accustomed to the light as I had been in the dark ever since I came home from my every day shift. I work as a security man in one of the first generation banks. At least one's job is still a little bit more secure in those places than in the newer generation banks, and there is the promise of a gratuity which may not be certain with the newer banks.
There had been no power supply for 3 days now and I was already dreading another sleepless night because of the irritating humming of the mosquitoes.
I actually do not really mind the bites as I do not even wake up when bitten, but the humming was so unbearable. Apart from the mosquitoes, mama Iyabo, my next door neighbor had just put to bed, and the baby constantly cried on top of her lungs almost through out the night. I wonder if it is the mosquitoes or the suffocating heat. A family of 6 lived in that room ;father, mother and their 4 children. I doubt if there is more than one year gap between the children. I thought mothers were more enlightened these days about contraceptives and birth control methods.
Just two nights ago I heard the 2 adults quarreling over money for baby food.
The husband works at the saw mill in Apapa and the woman is a food vendor in one of the public schools around. The compound is presently taking a leave from her early morning cooking at the backyard on school days. She wakes up as early as 4 am and begins to bang pot covers and spoons around in a bid to be ready before traffic builds up.
Last year one of her children had collapsed in the compound while both parents were away at work. Thankfully the woman that lives in the room opposite their room had found her lying on the floor of the passage on her way to the toilet at the back of the house. She had shouted and everyone had come running out of their rooms..................
To be continued.
