As the Millennium Development Goals expire at the end of 2015, the United Nations have come up with a new set of goals that is aimed at helping the UN member states focus their political strategies, policies and agendas on the global changes and improvements expected by year 2030 :
The Sustainable Development Goals.
The millennium development goals have been in existence since year 2000. The Eight goals : (–poverty and hunger reduction, improving universal access to education, promotion of gender equality, reduction of maternal and childhood deaths, combating HIV, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability, development of global partnerships) were established at a United Nations conference in year 2000.
Varying results have been observed in different countries as regards each goal. Some nations met and exceeded the target, some got close while a good number, especially the developing nations did not even come close to the set target of some of the goals.
Some other observers have said that the MDGs were narrow and did not take into full consideration the factors primarily responsible for the said deficits.
It was also said that the MDGs failed to take into consideration the economic and financial inequality in different nations and expected both rich and poor nations alike to achieve the same targets.
This led the United Nations to propose a new set of goals at the Rio + 20 conference held at Rio de Janeiro in June of year 2012.
17 goals and 169 targets were said to have been highlighted in the proposal document.
The proposed goals are said to be centered on the eradication of hunger and poverty, the improvement of health and education globally, sustaining attained developments and protecting the environment.
Questions have arisen as to how the SDGs will be funded, a conference to be held in Ethiopia Addis Ababa has been slated for July 2015 to address this issue.
Work is ongoing to finalize the specific goals and targets of the SDGs before the end of year 2015.
A conference to deliberate on the final goals and targets has been slated for September 2015, to be held in New York.
