Nigeria celebrates One year of being Polio free ....
We at PHNAfrica felicitate with Nigeria as she celebrates one year of being Polio free.
Today marks 1 year since Nigeria’s last reported case of the wild poliovirus disease. It is a remarkable achievement and moves the world much closer to being polio-free.
Nigeria for many years was a polio hub, with lots of set backs in whatever progress was made in the struggle to overcome this communicable disease.
Nigeria together with India, Afghanistan and Pakistan were in the same boat for many years. India however became Polio free in March 2014 and there have been no cases of the wild polio virus in India for more than 4 years.
Relentless vaccination across the country and especially in the hard to reach areas was instrumental in achieving this feat.
The Nation has been urged not to relent in her efforts to further eradicate Polio in Nigeria, and especially within the next two years, after which she will be declared Polio free.
