On the first day of February 2015 Dr Rebecca Moeti resumed her 5 year term as the new WHO regional director for Africa. She was appointed to this position last week at the 136th session of the WHO executive board in Geneva. Dr Moeti is well seasoned in public health and has over 35 years of work experience in this field. She hails from Botswana and has worked with the Botswana ministry of health, UNICEF, UNAIDS and the WHO in different positions. In a recent interview, she revealed her pressing agenda for her most recent appointment. In which she stated that the three Ebola stricken nations were of great concern to her at this time. She hopes to be able to put the outbreak to a permanent rest with the help of all and sundry. She hopes to also be able to help the affected nations recover economically and resurge their health systems. She acknowledged African nations that sent in workers to volunteer and also the WHO for mobilizing about 900 workers to these areas. She emphasizes that efforts are still ongoing to prevent the spread of Ebola to other African countries, especially Kenya, Ethiopia and South Africa which are travel areas. She stated that measures have been put in place to enhance surveillance and testing at ports of entry. A number of medical facilities have also been equipped to handle cases should the need arise Dr Moeti also hopes to help Motivate African leaders to increase the percentage of their budgets devoted to health care. As this will help improve the quality of health care delivered to the African people and also improve quality of life. We wish her a blissful and fulfilling tenure!
